HOW TO: Incorporate your travels into your home decor

Looking for some tips on travel home decor? Check below!

It has been a strange yet wonderful transition going from a full-time nomad to part-time traveller, part-time domesticated goddess. Back when I was living out of a suitcase, I would yearn to fill my non-existent home with travel mementoes and exotic homewares I collected on the road. Now that I finally have a space to call my own, I’m finally able to incorporate my travel memories into my home décor.  Here are a few ways that I’ve done so:

Photo Prints

Long gone are the thrilling days when you’d exchange a roll of film for a stack of glossy prints that may or may not be filled with beautiful photographic memories. It saddens me to think of the trillions of photographs that now sit idle on harddrives, never to be looked at again. Now that I have a home base, I’ve decided to make more of an effort to print out my travel photos in order to bring them back to life. I’ve been using Mixbook to print out my holiday snaps as they are one of the few companies that do square 5×5 photos, which are perfect for printing out Insta pics (plus, if you haven’t used Mixbook before, use the coupon code POLKADOT at checkout to receive $25 off your first order before the 30/9/2018)!

City Map Posters

I must admit, I am a bit of a geography nerd. In fact, I could literally sit and stare at maps for hours! If you share my obsession for maps and/ or monochrome minimalism, chances are you will also love posters like the ones from Mapiful. Not only do city maps make great home décor, they also act as special mementoes of places you’ve visited. These map posters are great as stand-alone features or can be integrated into gallery walls, like the one I’ve created in the bedroom.

Coffee Table Photo Books

With the introduction of digital photos also came the loss of physical sharing photos. I have such fond memories of sitting around my grandma’s coffee table as she showed me all her old family photo albums.  Somehow, uploading an album of travel photos onto Facebook doesn’t hold quite the same sentiment. A few years ago, I started making photo books as presents for friends that I’d been travelling with. Less labour-intensive than a scrapbook and more modern than a traditional photo album, photobooks still possess a power to relive all those travel memories. I recently used Mixbook to create a photo book of my road trip through the USA and Canada and was stoked with the result. Mixbook have a selection of easy templates that you drop photos into and lots of cute travel-themed, backgrounds, stickers and quotes to personalise the pages with.

Homewares from Abroad

I’ve never been one for collecting tacky souvenirs like snow-globes or shot glasses, but I do LOVE collecting artisan goods when I am travelling.  From hand-crafted ceramics in Turkey, cushion covers in India and hand-stitched leather poufs in Morocco, these goods have become some of most special and prized possessions. When shopping abroad, I would advise only purchasing items that you know are high-quality products. Very often you’ll find marketplaces selling cheap knockoffs. Often, it is best to ask locals where to buy authentic, hand-crafted goods and how much you should be paying- it is all too easy to get ripped off as a tourist. You can generally save a lot of money by buying through a wholesaler (for example, if you are purchasing a Turkish rug in Turkey) and often they are able to ship products back home for you!

Postcards

Postcards may be old-fashioned, but they are also the lightest, cheapest souvenir you can collect whilst abroad and can be turned into some beautiful travel home decor. Simply string up a postcard collection up with some twine and wooden pegs with a photo-hanging kit like this one-  it is such a simple way of adorning your house with travel mementoes!
