Palma is an incredible destination for everyone that’s looking for a unique beach holiday, but it’s also a place that goes beyond that, whether you’re a marine enthusiast, a curious traveler, or just looking for an unforgettable experience, then the Palma Aquarium promises an adventure like no other.

Palma Aquarium is a captivating attraction for the whole family that combines education, conservation, and entertainment. It’s the only place in the Balearic Islands where you snorkel with rays and dive with sharks, making it a must-visit while you’re in Palma.

Let’s explore what this aquatic paradise has to offer!

Palma Aquarium: The Best Attraction in the Balearic Islands

About Palma Aquarium

Palma Aquarium is a must-visit if you find yourself in Palma de Mallorca. Why? Because it’s not just an aquarium; it’s an immersive journey through marine ecosystems that will leave you speechless.

The attraction opened in 2007, and since then it has been committed to marine conservation and education. It welcomes a significant number of visitors annually and houses approximately 700 species across 55 aquariums and various ecosystems.

Not only that, but Palma Aquarium actively promotes sustainability through various initiatives, like organizing campaigns with the general public as well as with kids to get the word out, raise awareness, and help people understand the importance of conserving the oceans and seas.

Getting There

Palma Aquarium is not too far from the city’s center, also, during the high season you can hop on the convenient bus service that shuttles you directly to the aquarium. Without the need to worry about parking or navigating!

But if you decide to go by yourself, the aquarium is located in Calle Manuela de los Herreros Street, and it’s also close to Platja de Palma, which is a popular beach and easy to get to (use it as a reference).

While you can easily take the bus there, I highly recommend that you rent a car and drive by yourself!

Tickets and Timings

If you’re going in the high season, I recommend that you plan ahead and book your tickets online, the price is affordable and it goes from 19€ to 30€.

The aquarium opens early (from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM), so you can beat the crowds and have more time to explore.

Habitats and Animals

Now, what is interesting about the Palma aquarium is its many different habitats and the amount of species you can find there.

Here are some of them:

Mediterranean

The Mediterranean section showcases 7% of all marine species. You’ll be able to explore colorful fish, octopuses, seahorses, and vibrant corals that can be found on that side of the sea.

Tropical Seas

If you want to check out the species that can be found in places like the Atlantic, and Pacific oceans, then the tropical seas are your best option.

There you will get the chance to admire vibrant coral reefs and diverse colorful fish.

Gardens

On this habitat you will find the recreating of a typical garden that does a good job of captivating Mallorca’s scenic beauty, here you will spot olive and cypress trees as well as turtles, stingrays, and fish.

Jungle

Another popular outdoor habitat that’s home to a huge collection of exotic vegetation, a lush microclimate with a 7-meter waterfall.

It’s home to alligator snapping turtles, softshell turtles, and piranhas. The best option to learn about the connection between oceans and nature.

Big Blue

The Big Blue boasts Europe’s deepest shark tanks, holding over 3.5 million liters of saltwater. Observe sharks and other marine creatures during feeding sessions.

Make sure to ask when are the feeding sessions and get there as early as possible, it can get crowded.

Experiences and Activities

Palma Aquarium: The Best Attraction in the Balearic Islands

Habits is not the only good thing about Palma Aquarium, it also offers a bunch of different activities, making it one of the best things to do with children in Mallorca.

On one side you have the Cinema Aquadome which offers a unique experience to learn more about humpback whales in a 360º immersive 3D cinema. On the other hand, you have the Shark Vision Boat, where you can hop aboard and observe sharks from a unique perspective.

If after your visit you feel like learning more about how the aquarium works, then the Backstage Tour is for you, there you will discover what happens behind the aquarium scenes and learn about maintenance, feeding, and care.

Here are some of the most popular:

Swim with the Sharks. Yes, you read that right! Palma Aquarium is the only place in the Balearic Islands where you can dive alongside these majestic creatures.

Imagine the rush as you descend into their world, surrounded by the silent elegance of sharks.

Snorkel with Rays. If you’re not that daring to swim with sharks, then get up close and personal with a gentle stingray. While it’s not as intimidating, you should always show respect and follow professional instructions.

You will get all the gear and preparation from the aquarium. This is probably one of the most unique experiences, a must-do if you’re in Palma!
