Seaside or countryside – Which should you choose for a summer holiday?

Seaside or countryside – Which should you choose for a summer holiday?

When dreaming about our summer holidays, most of us probably aren’t planning to spend them on a city break. The quintessential summer holiday involves getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, escaping to somewhere that’s different, fresh and out under the bright blue sky.

But what if you’re struggling to choose between a holiday in the rolling hills of the countryside or the sandy beaches of the seaside? They’re both great options, with plenty of each type of destination to pick from for your summer holidays in the UK that offer an abundance of opportunities for relaxation and adventure.

That’s why we’re going to lay out the case for both seaside and countryside breaks to help you decide which is the better fit for your next summer holiday.

Seaside serenity

Seaside or countryside – Which should you choose for a summer holiday?

For hundreds of years, people have been heading to the seaside on their holidays, drawn to the sound of waves crashing against the shore, the salty taste of the sea air and the magnificent blue of the water itself. There’s a reason fish and chips are one of the most well-known UK dishes!

If you want to get away from urban life, then the seaside offers a major contrast against skyscrapers and packed streets. Along the UK’s extensive coastline, you can find many different beaches to choose from, and plenty of well-established coastal resorts to welcome you in.

Whether you head down south to Cornwall or up north to Yorkshire, there’s a slice of seaside charm to suit your tastes.

One particular benefit of heading to the beach during the summer is the chance to indulge in some water sports. There’s no better way to cool down during the hottest days of the year than by getting out on – or in! – the water. From surfing and paddle boarding to kayaking and swimming, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy your time in the sea.

And, if the waters aren’t your style, you can still enjoy soaking up the summer sun on the sands. Plenty of beaches are adjacent to promenades and walking routes that anyone can enjoy, no matter your level of fitness, and there’s always likely to be the chance to snag an ice cream nearby. Alternatively, holiday parks located near the coast offer a range of other activities and accommodations, making it easy to extend your beach getaway.

Countryside charms

Seaside or countryside – Which should you choose for a summer holiday?

The seaside isn’t the only oasis away from the grey of urban life, as the countryside is bursting with vibrant green hillsides, valleys full of colourful wildflowers and just as many pretty villages to visit.

During the summer months, the countryside comes alive with the bounty of nature and an explosion of colour. It’s easy to spend a summer holiday simply exploring a few of the walking trails around the UK, taking the time to wander beneath the boughs of ancient trees or hiking through more mountainous terrain.

If you’re looking to get even fresher air, then consider a visit to regions like the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands or Snowdonia. The contrast between the smooth lakes and the dramatic backdrop of the mountains creates some of the most beautiful views in the entire country. You might even find a nearby seaside!

Even if you aren’t looking to embrace the outdoors life, there are plenty of cultural experiences and locations to explore out in the countryside. Whether it’s ancient castles and fortifications or charming postcard villages, you can easily step back in time and explore parts of the UK’s long and storied history.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to what you’re looking for in your next holiday. Do you want to spend days lounging on the beach or would you rather spend them hiking through rolling valleys instead?

No matter whether you choose the seaside or the countryside, your next UK summer holiday is sure to offer plenty of chances to relax or go on an adventure.
