Cotton and linen clothing

Goa Packing List: What to Pack for your Goan Adventure

The climate in Goa is typically hot, with the average temperature is around 30°C. As such, it’s important to bring cotton or linen clothes since these are fabrics known to be breathable amidst scorching temperatures. Additionally, cotton prevents the buildup of moisture and sweat, while linen is known to have temperature-regulating properties that make it easier to feel fresh throughout the day.

Goa is generally tolerant of most clothing, so wearing shorts, strapless shirts, and beachwear is acceptable. However, if you’re planning to visit the local temples and other religious sites, it’s important to be culturally educated and dress accordingly. This means wearing pants, long skirts, and covering your shoulders.

Sunglasses

In addition to heat, you will be exposed to a lot of sunlight and some ultraviolet (UV) rays while in Goa. Goa’s average UV index can reach up to 15, which falls under the higher end of the spectrum. Prolonged UV exposure can deteriorate your vision and lead to corneal damage, which is why wearing sunglasses is important.

Make sure you get good-quality sunglasses that block out 100% of UV light. You should also make sure your sunglasses are made from non-corrosive materials that can withstand salty air, as the region is known for having strong sea winds.

Skin protection

As well as your eyes, your skin also needs proper sun protection. You don’t want to risk sun damage during your Goan holiday! Make sure you bring products with enough Sun Protection Factor (SPF) and Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF).

For SPF, it’s best to get a sunscreen that has SPF 50 upwards since this blocks out 98% of UV rays from damaging your skin. However, it’s important to note that sunscreen becomes less effective after two hours, and you need to reapply in order to maximise the benefits. As for UPF products, you can choose from a variety of hats, long-sleeved shirts, and pants with a UPF 50 rating for optimal protection.

Mosquito repellent

Although Goa is known for its scorching heat, the monsoon season creates a humid environment that tends to bring in a lot of mosquitoes. According to local news sources, dengue is a prevalent disease during heavy rains and everyone is recommended to have proper mosquito repellent to protect against the infection.

Products with diethyltoluamide (DEET) are the most widely recommended in repelling mosquitos and are found in most leading brands. It effectively prevents mosquito bites and fends off mosquitos from your skin.

Alternatively, products with lemon and eucalyptus oil are also effective and come in different concentrations to help you choose which one is best for your skin.
