Does anyone else feel that the longer you spend in Does anyone else feel that the longer you spend in one place, the quicker the time flies by? I feel like I blinked and just like that, our month in Paris has come to an end. 🤯

It’s been a rollercoaster few weeks. There’s been many highs- feasting on incredible food, soaking in the beautiful sights, indulging in all the Paris clichés. Basically, all the highlights that you see posted on my stories.

As I mentioned in my last post, there have also been some lows- particularly having to stay inside with COVID for a week and being overwhelmed by the busyness of where we are staying.

There’s also been a lot of mundanity- chilling at our Airbnb, working, making unaesthetic meals, more work. Its so easy to get lost in the highlight reels and forget that whether you are travelling or not, days are always going to be comprised of mundane moments.

So if you ever find that you are comparing your life to someone’s else’s life, just remember that is their highlight reel. They may be really good at making their life look super aesthetic or exciting on social media, but remember that they still face the same mundane realities of life that you do. 🙃

Case in point: These photos were taken on our first night in Paris, where we got to stay in a beautiful hotel with a cute balcony and a view of the Eiffel Tower (thanks to partnership I was doing with a travel company). The rest of our time in Paris we have been staying in far less glamorous digs, but of course the first place we stayed is what makes it on the gram.

I’m hoping that sharing these realities with you guys will help make my little corner of the internet feel a bit more authentic. I’ll admit that lately I’ve felt more focused on post performance than on connection with this amazing community, and I really want to change that. So if you resonate with any of this, please do let me know! 😌
Instagram VS Reality (swipe right for the unedited Instagram VS Reality (swipe right for the unedited photo) 📷

As we all know by now, what we consume on Instagram is not a reflection of reality. For example, take this photo of me in front of the Arc de Triomphe. There was no way I could ever get a shot like this, without a person or car in sight. This is clearly an edited version of reality.

I don’t know about you, but for me, scrolling through immaculately curated content sometimes inspires me, and sometimes it leaves me feeling a little envious, or even a little empty. It is so easy to forget the reality that is going on in background. Yet, as a content creator myself, I should know better than most that a picture or video doesn’t tell the full story.

As I pondered this, I realised that I have been guilty of sharing a lot of curated content recently, without sharing a lot of reality. Take our time in Paris, for instance. Don’t get me wrong, it has been amazing. But all the picture-perfect Parisian scenes and delectable French food I’ve been posting about doesn’t tell the FULL story.

So I thought I’d share a few realities of our time in Paris that haven’t been so Instaworthy:

* Booked an Airbnb for a month which is a really cool space & we got a great deal on, but is in a pretty dodgy part of town which I don’t feel particularly safe walking around in
* The Airbnb was dirty when we arrived, and in the first few days we didn’t have hot water & the neighbours threw a very loud party that kept us up till 4.30am
* I had my phone stolen when we were picnicking under the Eiffel Tower (by some miracle, I got it back thanks to a bad ass French women who literally l ran after the thief and made him return it and apologise)
* James & I both tested positive for COVID and have spent the week isolating inside & trying to navigate ordering medicine and groceries in French

I wanted to share these things not to complain, but just to bring home the point that travelling often appears picture-perfect from the outside, but it is not. It’s just life, full of ups and downs, highs and lows. 💙
