What is a digital nomad visa?
A digital nomad visa is a special type of visa that grants you the right to live and work in Turkey for up to one year, without having to pay taxes or social security contributions in Turkey. You can apply for this visa if you meet the following criteria:
- You are a citizen of one of the eligible countries (see the list here: https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/info/who-is-eligible-for-e-visa/)
- You have a valid passport with at least six months of validity
- You have a valid health insurance that covers you in Turkey
- You have sufficient financial means to support yourself in Turkey (at least $500 per month)
- You have proof of income from a foreign employer or your own business (at least $1000 per month)
How to apply for a digital nomad visa for Turkey
The application process for a digital nomad visa is quite simple and straightforward. Applications happen online through the official e-visa website: https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/
You will need to fill out an online form with your personal and travel information, upload your passport photo and documents, pay the visa fee (around $50) and download your e-visa. There is an option to print it out or save it on your phone.
You will need to present your e-visa along with your passport and health insurance at the border control when you enter Turkey. You will also need to register with the local authorities within 20 days of your arrival, and obtain a residence permit card that will serve as your ID in Turkey.
What are the benefits of being a digital nomad in Turkey?
Turkey is an amazing country to live and work as a digital nomad, for many reasons. Here are some of the benefits that I have enjoyed during my stay:
COST OF LIVING: The cost of living is very affordable, especially compared to Western Europe or North America. You can find decent accommodation, food, transportation and entertainment for a fraction of what you would pay elsewhere.
REAL ESTATE: There are numerous options for buying real estate in Turkey for expats if you eventually want to look at relocating to Turkey longer term. https://turk.estate/en/ is a good place to explore and compare prices.
INTERNET: The internet speed and reliability are generally good, especially in big cities and tourist areas. You can find many coworking spaces, cafes and hotels that offer free or cheap wifi access.
CLIMATE: The climate is diverse and pleasant, depending on where you choose to live. You can enjoy the Mediterranean sun and sea in the south, the snow-capped mountains and forests in the east, or the vibrant urban life in Istanbul.
CULTURE: The culture is rich and diverse, influenced by various civilizations that have shaped Turkey’s history. You can explore the ancient ruins of Ephesus, the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia, the mosques and palaces of Istanbul, or the modern art and nightlife of Ankara.
PEOPLE: The people are friendly and hospitable, always ready to help you out or invite you for a cup of tea. You can learn some basic Turkish words and phrases to communicate with them, or use English as many people speak it as well.
